Steve Pouppirt Honored for 17 Years of Service to Charter High School for Architecture + Design

6/23/17 - Steve Pouppirt was honored for his 17 years of dedication to the Charter High School for Architecture + Design and its Designing Futures Foundation at the school’s Annual Gala Champagne Breakfast on June 23rd. Joined by Clemens employees and his children, he thanked the Board for the award and reflected on his affection for the school.

Steve’s involvement with CHAD began a year after its 1999 opening, when Sandy Garz, then-President of the Philadelphia Chapter of the AIA, gave him a tour of CHAD and he was “bitten by the bug." He recently explained "the opportunity to help Philadelphia’s under-represented students pursue careers in the field I'm passionate about was really exciting." Shortly thereafter, he joined CHAD’s Board of Directors, where he helped launch the Designing Futures Foundation and conceived and implemented the Annual Gala Champagne Breakfast, which would become the school’s major annual fundraising event it is today. Due to the initial financial risk of the event–as well as his confidence in the idea–he guaranteed he would personally reimburse CHAD for any losses incurred should low ticket sales fail to cover the event’s cost. The gamble paid off exponentially--there was an outpouring of interest and support shown in the initial attendance, exceeding 100. He would go on to become President of the DFF in 2006.

In 2013, Steve dedicated Clemens’ Annual Charity Golf Outing to CHAD. The group effort with Clemens’ partners--subcontractors, suppliers, architects and clients--was such a success that it quickly became Clemens’ most anticipated annual event and has raised upwards of $125,000 to date. He also recently donated Clemens’ construction management services for CHAD’s new Media Center, pictured above.

Clemens to Build New 24-Story Residential Tower at 12th & Market

market sum

1/12/17 - DC-based National Real Estate Development (NRED) has engaged Clemens Construction Company to build a 24-story mixed-use tower slated to break ground at the corner of Philadelphia's 12th and Market Streets in March.

With substantial completion expected in Summer 2018, the 240-unit West Tower will join the East Tower already underway at the east end of the 1100 block. Both residential towers will sit atop a combined 160,000 square feet of retail space over underground parking.

Led by BLT Architects locally, the West Tower reflects New York Design Architect Morris Adjmi's signature composite-metal-skin-large-window-wall design. The 240 luxury studio, one, and two-bedroom apartments will have floor-to-ceiling-windows, exposed concrete ceilings, wood floors, white oak cabinetry and high-end fixtures. The third floor will house a comprehensive amenity level with a movie theater, green roof and outdoor pool.

The West Tower is a key component of NRED's five-year, $600 million East Market redevelopment spanning the entire 4.3-acre city block bound by Market, Chestnut, 11th and 12th streets. The collection of new and renovated historic structures will compound the recent growth of modern retail, residential and commercial space already in motion in Philadelphia's Market East district.

Nearby Clemens projects also helping to transform Philadelphia's Market East district:

  • Façade/interior renovation of the historic Family Court Building
(aka. Girard Square) at 34 South 11th Street
  • Construction/conversion of 1112-1128 Chestnut Street, named 2016's
Best Adaptive Re-use Project by GBCA
  • Façade/interior renovations of 15 South 11th Street

11/16/16 - We had so much fun attending Trash Bash, the annual fundraiser for the RAIR (Recycled Artist In Residency) Program hosted by Revolution Recovery, one of our partners in green building. Held at Philadelphia's Crane Arts Center, the pieces on exhibit consisted entirely of raw materials or subjects procured from discarded debris before it was sorted, shipped and recycled. We will continue to support RAIR in our shared dedication to sustainable design.

"It’s an exciting time for Clemens and for the City of Philadelphia as a whole," says Stephen Pouppirt, President of Clemens Construction Company, "We look forward to the GBCA Awards all year – it’s important to acknowledge the achievements of our industry."

Given the caliber of the competition from our peers this and every year, we were humbled to receive these accolades. 7/22/16 - We’re pleased to announce that as our renovation of the East Tower of Park Towne Place nears completion in October, we will launch renovations of the North Tower. Thanks to the successful implementation of an aggressive schedule, we are set to complete substantial renovations to the 245-unit East Tower on time and under budget.

This major undertaking required the construction of new, modernized floor plans with open kitchens and spacious closets, as well as enhanced contemporary finishes including top-of-the-line flooring, cabinets, countertops and fixtures. The penthouse units also include built-in millwork, a fireplace with stone surround, quartz countertops, glass door accent cabinets, walk-in closets and refinished balconies with breathtaking city views. The lobby has also been restored to its original lavishness with new terrazzo floors and modern access control, and – in keeping with the artistic identity of its location – features work by local artists.

Clemens also handled fit-outs of communal spaces – a dry cleaner and MRKT, a boutique grocery providing staples and prepared foods to residents in a convenient location.

Clemens is proud to be the builder executing the massive overhauls on the East Tower and now the 227-unit North Tower. Our team looks forward to a seamless transition from the conclusion of one project to the commencement of the other, with an expected completion of November 2017. Comprised of four 19-story apartment towers with extensive community amenity spaces, Park Towne Place is a registered historic landmark located just off the Benjamin Franklin Parkway in Philadelphia’s Museum District. This icon of midcentury architecture is currently undergoing a transformation that highlights city living in one of the city’s most beautiful neighborhoods.

She will be starting out with two projects in Center City for Midwood.

1128 Chestnut Street Project Reviewed In The Philadelphia Inquirer

7/2/16 - Architecture Critic Inga Saffron published a glowing review of our 1128 Chestnut project. Congrats to the entire 1128 team!

"Because of the new interest in the east side, generally referred to as East Market, that incredible diversity is likely to come under pressure from developers seeking large building sites. Yet smart developers, like those behind the large mixed-use project at 11th and Market, are working to replicate the neighborhood texture by breaking down the scale of their sites and reviving small streets."

Ping Pong League Kick-Off Game

6/30/16 - History was made on June 30th as the Ping Pong Teams of Clemens Construction Company and Alterra Property Group faced off in a legendary match.

"It was an epic showdown," said Steven Angelo, Clemens Team Captain and Project Manager.

A hush fell across the second floor conference room as spectators, on the edge of their seats, watched these fierce competitors battle for their company, their team, and above all, their jobs.. err.. pride! ("Work hard, play hard" has taken on a whole new meaning!) While both teams displayed the raw athleticism that harkens the Eye of the Tiger, the actual winner is still unclear.

There's talk of league forming, but regardless, we hope this is the first of many official games to come. We invite any local industry teams out there to challenge us any time. You bring the pizza, we'll provide the beer!

6/15/16 - From a pool of 15 competitive projects, the building Clemens constructed for Community Legal Services, Inc. was recognized June 15th at the Urban Land Institute of Philadelphia's Annual Willard G. "Bill" Rouse III Awards for Excellence. This project showcased our commitment to work with a client from pre-construction to ensure that the design intent is achieved both visually and financially.

As ULI noted, this project for Philadelphia's premier legal services organization was built on a landlocked, tight urban site comprised of six lots reclaimed as part of Philadelphia's Neighborhood Transformation Initiative. The project realized the Rouse Award Goals by transforming this busy urban corridor with its use of best practices, quality planning and design, environmental sustainability, economic success and market acceptance.

The building features green community spaces, public meeting space, a green roof and planted courtyard for clients and staff, as well as private amenities to accommodate client needs. Funded with a RACP grant, it achieved LEED Gold status and received the 2013 Building Excellence Award for Best Commercial Project Under $10 Million from the General Building Contractors Association.

1430 Walnut Project Featured on Cover of US Glass Magazine

5/1/16 - Collaboration is key in innovative construction. That’s why we were so proud to see our 1430 Walnut Street project highlighted on the cover of the May issue of US Glass Magazine:

As the contractor selected by Midwood and Bohlin Cywinski Jackson (BCJ) to do pre-construction and ultimately construction of 1430 Walnut Street, it was critical that the project team worked closely early on. As Frank Grauman, BCJ Principal stated for US Glass Magazine, "collaboration has become a positive theme in construction, and architects are more and more enthusiastic about this approach."

Clemens too believes in early collaboration. As Grauman further stated, "our relationship with Clemens Construction Company was critical. Innovation takes a high level of trust, so the whole team can go at it together. The trend to bring the contract glazier in early is strong in this industry, and it's almost becoming a standard operating approach. So, when Clemens saw where we were headed, they brought Eureka Metal & Glass in very early."

At 1430, the team developed a custom, unitized curtainwall system that ensured that with 22-foot floor-to-floor heights the structure did not detract from the clear glass appearance. This solution was unique – one that had never been used before in the U.S. Clearly, collaboration was key.

The project is also an award winner. The General Building Contractors Association presented it with a 2015 Construction Excellence Award for Best Commercial Project Over $10 Million.

Congrats to the entire 1430 team!
