Kingsessing Recreation Center, one of Philadelphia’s oldest and largest rec centers, is undergoing a full renovation through the city’s Rebuild initiative. Originally opened in 1916 and designed by city architect Philip H. Johnson, the 32,000 SF Beaux-Arts building is being completely modernized by Clemens Construction. Interior upgrades include all-new mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection systems, as well as significant accessibility improvements such as new ramps, staircases, and a three-stop elevator. The lower level will feature restrooms, locker rooms, utility and storage areas, exercise rooms, and a dojo. On the ground floor, new spaces include a lounge, offices, conference room, arts and crafts room, and two large multi-purpose gymnasiums. The upper floor will house an auditorium and stage, game room, computer room, kitchen, and staff office.

Exterior work across the 9.2-acre site will create welcoming, active outdoor spaces for the community. Improvements include new playground equipment, a multi-sport artificial turf field, upgraded site lighting, pedestrian pathways, picnic and seating areas, and a wall ball court. The existing tennis courts will be restriped for continued use. While not part of the renovation scope, the adjacent pool patio and basketball courts remain integral to the site’s recreational offerings. Together, the interior and exterior upgrades aim to preserve the historic character of Kingsessing Rec Center while transforming it into a fully accessible, inclusive, and modern hub for community life.
